Thaatथाट

One of ten parent scales that Hindustani raags are grouped under, based on which of the twelve semitones they use.

Thaat is a classification system (formalized by musicologist V. N. Bhatkhande) rather than something performed directly — Bilawal, Kafi, Kalyan, Khamaj, Bhairav, Bhairavi, Marwa, Purvi, Todi and Asavari cover the ten combinations of natural, flat (komal) and sharp (teevra) notes that raags draw from. Two raags in the same thaat share a scale but differ in aaroh/avroh shape, vadi/samvadi and characteristic phrases.
