Raagराग
A melodic framework in Hindustani classical music — a set of rules for which notes to use, in which order, and with which emphasis — rather than a fixed tune.
A raag (also spelled raga) defines a scale (its aaroh and avroh), a characteristic phrase (pakad), a principal note (vadi) and secondary note (samvadi), and conventions like which time of day it’s traditionally performed. Two performances of the same raag can sound quite different in melody while still being recognizably the same raag, because a raag is a framework for improvisation, not sheet music.
