Khaliखाली

An unemphasized section (vibhag) within a taal's cycle, traditionally marked with a wave of the hand rather than a clap.

Khali sections are played more softly, often with the bass (bayan) stroke omitted, creating a call-and-response feel against the tali sections. Skipping or softening khali is one of the first things a tabla student learns to internalize.
