Gharanaघराना
A stylistic lineage or school of Hindustani classical music, traditionally passed from teacher to student across generations.
Gharanas (literally “household”) are associated with particular cities — Gwalior, Agra, Kirana, Patiala and others — and are known for characteristic approaches to ornamentation, raag treatment and repertoire, though the boundaries have blurred considerably in recent generations.
